Gender-Neutral Labels Have Provided An Inclusive Environment
Could this be the future of Fashion?
2018 has become the year where gender does not dictate how we choose to dress. Steps have been taken to create a more inclusive look for all genders. Fashion designers like Marc Jacobs, or Gucci have started to combine men and women collections on the runway. At the Spring/Summer 2018 NYFW was the most gender diverse sitting with 31 Transgender Women, and Non-Binary model appearances across 29 different runways.
At the front line for gender neutral clothing, stands John Lewis who announced to stop dividing children's clothes into girls, and boys. Along with this, more and more labels have begun to challenge to social norm. H&M is following the new wave by launching a unisex denim line. Zara has also recently released an "ungendered," clothing line of subtly colored denim t-shirts, and hoodies. However, gender-neutral clothing isn't something new.
Gender-Neutral clothing, which is traditionally known as Unisex clothing dates all the way back to the 1960's. The trend started to create a name during the Women's Liberation Movement during the 1960's, and 1970's. It does seem appropriate, that the usage of breaking gender barriers in clothing, is starting to come back.
This new trend, will be something, that more and more designers include in their brand. Already designer like Abercrombie & Fitch, Marc Jacobs, John Lewis, H&M, and Zara have started. However there are now other brands that specialize in making gender-neutral clothing like, 69 Worldwide, TooGood London, Not Equal, TILLYAndWILLIAM, and One DNA.
