The Relationship Between Fashion & Music
The Relationship Between Fashion & Music
Two art forms that will always go hand in hand
Music and Fashion have always had an intertwined relationship that has clearly depicted the times. As a way of self expression, as a way of individualism, and of course as an art form the two have always bounced off of each other, and will continue. There was no specific time that the relationship had originated, it was always together. From the roaring 20's where Jazz music started off extremely scandalous with feminist undertones resulting in flapper fashion, short dresses, no bras, and loose clothing; to the hippie movement in the 60's with psychedelic music breaking out after the popularization of drugs and LSD shifting the fashion trends into more "trippy" clothing. Music and fashion always worked together in a symbiotic relationship to mirror the culture of each era.
The relationships between music and fashion is still used for inspiration by modern day musicians. Charles Hall, known for his album "I Got My Shit Together," which was released back in Sep. 2017 said, "As my music continues to grow, so will my style, both will always go hand in hand. I've always been that person that never wanted to match clothes perfectly." Hall has done that by visually showing his music through his fashion. "In my head a plaid long sleeve over a tie-dye hoodie, with floral pants, an off colored beanie, and checkered shoes will match. It'll make sense in my head, but nobody else will see that, and that's pretty much how my music is," said Hall.
It has also been proven important for young musicians to be able to identify different types of music and how they use clothing to accentuate their aesthetic. Kokopelli, a new musician that plans to release his debut album by the end of the year commented, "A music group that sticks out in my mind would be The Garden, a group consisting of twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears. Their outlandish style is inspiring to me...most of the stuff they wear consists of crazy pieces from thrift stores." This "outlandish style," helps the duo highlight their experimental/punk rock music. "Music and fashion go hand in hand, and are both a way for people to express who they are," told Kokopelli.
The relationship between the two hasn't just been a creative one, but also a business relationship. In
the past music has helped inspire and promote new brands. For example Steve Madden's first top seller was the "Mary Lou," inspired and promoted by 90's punk rock artists at the time. Hall explained, "In terms of hip/hop alone, when My Adidas was released it was what helped popularize Adidas, as well for Wu Tang Clan popularizing Tommy Hilfiger, and Tyler the Creator popularizing Supreme."
Fashion has helped music become a method of showing individuality, political beliefs ,and ideas rather than standardized entertainment. The collective mind has gone from 1950's modernized jazz to 1960's tie-dye, and bell bottoms; from 1980's mini skirts, parachute pants, and leg warmer's to 1990's grunge, hip/hop, and rave music. The evolution of music has always been tied together with the evolution of fashion. Through these two methods of self expression, each era has been able to test the boundaries of the status quo.
The relationship between the two is a never ending cycle and will continue for the next 100 years to show whats really going on in the "collective mind."
